| Herpes Remedies - For those who have it, or those intimate with someone who is a carrier, herpes is a big issue. And although herpes is not life threating, it is highly contagious and sexually transmittable. Breakouts can be painful, embarrassing, and even debilitating. Currently, there is no cure for herpes. Even the antiviral drugs we use to treat herpes produce varied results, and a breakout is always possible. For those who are looking for a more organic, natural way to treat a herpes breakout, both the Astragalus root and Siberian Ginseng are the most promising of herbal treatments. Using Astragalus to treat herpes: The astragalus membranaceus root is native to Asia. It is commonly used in chinese medecine, but has become in herbal and alternative medicine in the western world as well. In eastern medicine, astragalus is generally combined with other herbs (including ginseng) to treat everything from herpes to cancer to strokes. Although there is little evidence as to the effectiveness of all these applications, there has been some studies to show a positive result in treating genital herpes. More studies need to be conducted to determine just how successful this method is, as well as double blind, control group studies to eliminate the placebo factor. Eastern medicine generally prescribes Astragalus to be taken daily to PREVENT herpes outbreaks, rather than TREAT existing sores. However, both eastern and western studies have shown Astragalus may be able to both supress future outbreaks and treat sores directly if they do occur. Furthermore Astragalus has shown promise in treating both herpes simplex 1 and 2. It is the only herb that may do so. Using Ginseng to treat herpes: Another herb that has shown promise in reducing herpes outbreaks is siberian ginseng. In clinical trials, people taking ginseng vs. a placebo found they had less breakouts after a 3 month period of regularly taking ginseng pills. The downside to the study is it found ginseng is ineffective against herpes simplex virus 1, which is typically oral herpes, but can be genital herpes as well. Many more studies need to be performed on each herb to truly determine the herbs limitation in treatment, most effective way of administering the herbs, and time frame to see results. Also, any possible side effects or drug interactions are important to note, and warn people who choose to treat herpes via a natural organic method. |
