| Natural Migraine Remedies- These are the most common of the "chronic headaches", and are not yet completely understood. It is known that neurochemical changes occur during a migraine, including lower seratonin levels. The brain responds to this by signaling the release of neuropeptides. These peptides travel to the outer surface of the brain (meninges) and this can result in migraine headache pain. Common Triggers Include: female hormone fluctuations, certain foods, sensory stimuli such as bright lights, strong scents, etc., Sleeping pattern changes, medications, and stress Below are some natural migraine remedies that may work for you :
Dosage: 2 - 3 fresh leaves a day, or 100 - 300 mg of a feverfew supplement, taken 4 times a day, containing 0.2% - 0.4% parthenolides. Side effects: stomach pain, gas, diarhhea, nausea, vomiting. For those taking the fresh leaves, oral ulcers, loss of taste, and oral swelling can occur. It can also interact with blood thinning medications. So always consult a doctor before using this or any other herb or supplement to treat a headache. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): The B2 vitamin if often prescribed or recommended as a migraine treatment, and for good reason. Several studies have demonstrated B2 can act as a natural migraine headache remedy. It can reduce the frequency of severity of these types of headaches. One study had 49 migraine sufferers take 400mg of b2 every day, for 90 days. Furthermore, 23 of these were given 75mg of asprin to take as a placebo. At the end of the 90 days, 37% of the B2 group reported fewer migrianes. In another study of 55 individuals, they took either Riboflavin or a placebo. Over time, the group who took Riboflavin decreased their migraine occurance by approx. 3.8 migraines per month. This group orginally had 2-8 migraines per month. The placebo group experienced no difference. Dosage: 400mg via supplementation, or better yet, simply eat a diet high in vitamin B2, such as nuts, green leafy veggies, legumes (beans), and organ meat. Side effects: An allergic reaction is possible. Also, a harmless discoloration of urine can occur. ALWAYS consult a doctor before taking this or any other vitamin or supplement, as it can be dangerous in high amounts, or to women nursing or pregnant. 5-HTP: This is a naturally occuring compound that the body produces from metabolizing the amino acid triptophane (a sleep inducing compound found in poultry) 5-HTP contributes to seratonin and melatonin creation in the body. Two studies have been conducted, and together they found 5-HTP reduces the severity and frequency of migraines headaches. One involved 124 who took 500mg of 5-HTP per day, or methysergide, a very common prescription medication for migraines. After 6 months, 5-HTP was equally effective in reducing migraine occurance and severity. Another group took 5-HTP for the headache drug propranolol. Both compounds experienced a significant decrease in migraine frequency, however, the 5-HTP group did not experience as much relief as the drug group. Dosage: 500mg per day, taken either once a day, or two capsules a day of 250mg each.
