Natural remedies for nausea - is there anything natural or herbal that is proven work stop nausea?
Nausea is a terrible feeling for anyone that has experienced it...and almost all of us have. First, the head rush and stomach pain...then, the constant feeling of being right on the edge of vomiting...and then, the vomiting, the stomach convulsions, and a repulsive, painful feeling that we would do ANYTHING to stop.
In fact, nausea has been studied, and it has been found to be the most upsetting physical feeling anyone can experience. Memories of nausea triggers the most intense negative reactions in people. In fact, if something was nauseating at one time, sometimes just the memory of it will be enough to nauseate again. For example, getting drunk to the point of vomiting with a particular brand of alcohol. This often has the effect of never being able to even smell that same alcohol again.
Of course, there are manufactured remedies for nausea, but these aren't always the most effective, and they tend to come with the most side effects. So what are some effective natural remedies for nausea?
The following remedies are the most effective natural remedies for nausea, based on clinical studies.
Number 3: Peppermint
breathing peppermint oil or inhaling peppermint infused water is a very fast, effective way to stop the feeling of nausea. To breathe peppermint oil, simply place 1 - 3 drops of peppermint on a hankercheif, and place it over the mouth. Breathe deeply, and the feeling of nausea should subside almost instantly. This method was studied in the late 90's, and it was published in "The Journal of Advanced Nursing". Alternately, you can fill a bowl with hot water and 2 drops of peppermint oil, and inhale the fumes. Do not drink peppermint essential oil.
Number 2: Ginger
5 separate studies have been conducted with ginger, and they each demonstrate ginger helps reduce nausea when compared to a placebo. One study was of 80 sea men, each prone to sea sickness. Another study was of healthy people who became nauseous due to illness. And two other studies were on pregnant women suffering from morning sickness. In all cases, ginger was effective in reducing feeling of nausea, and vomiting. In a 5th trial of chemotherapy patients, ginger helped reduce nausea, but not vomiting. The typical recommended dose of ginger to achieve this effect is 1 gram a day, taken 0.25 grams at a time, 4 times a day. Pregnant women should consult a doctor first, because ginger may have an effect on a developing baby. Also, pregnant women should not take this much ginger for more than 4 days in a row.
Number 1: acupressure bands and acupuncture
Believe it or not, acupressure bands have been the most effective natural treatments for nausea. In a study of 60 people conducted in Sweden at Lund university, it found acupressure bands were effective when compared to a placebo, as long as they were placed on P6, a specific pressure point on the arm. The most conclusive study was that a combination of acupuncture and acupressure conducted on 88 with a severe form of morning sickness concluded that it was as effective as some prescription nausea medications, and had the pleasant side effect of creating a superior psychological side effects. While positive side effects are rare with other treatments, this one is particularly positive.
Additional treatment for pregnant women suffering from morning sickness:
Vitamin B6 was studied in two separate studies by the university of Maryland and in Thailand, and both studies found the same result. A dosage of 10 mg - 25 mg of B6 reduced the feelings and symptoms of morning sickness. It is not known exactly why this works, but it does. If you are going to try the B6 method, take 10 - 20 mg pills, 3 times a day. Do not exceed 60 mg per day, due to potential birth defects or health issues that can arise if over 100mg of b6 is taken per day.
As always, consult a medical professional before taking any of these treatments, as some, particularly ginger and B6 may have a rare unwanted effects on an unborn baby. This information is intended as educational only.
